Abstract

Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is a recurrent inflammatory parotitis in children of unknown etiology. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of unilateral or bilateral swelling, pain and tenderness in the parotid gland associated with fever or malaise. The age of onset is between 4 months and 15 years, but the disease resolves spontaneously after puberty. Boys are affected more often than girls. The diagnosis of choice is a B-mode ultrasonography. Ultrasound demonstrates multiple minute (1-3 mm) hypoechoic or anechoic focal lesions corresponding to punctate sialectasis. Recurrent parotitis is usually managed conservatively. Here I report typical ultrasound images and review clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatment options of juvenile recurrent parotitis.
