A Study on the Degrees of Work Stress and Burnout Experienced by the Nurses in Medical Insurance

Abstract

This study was done for the purpose of identifying the degrees of work stress and burnout experience of nurses who worked for evaluating medical insurance. The subjects of study were 154 nurses from 32 hospitals out of all the hospitals in charge of evaluating medical insurance in korea. Data were collected for 1 month from April 20 to May 20, 2001. The range of total work stress scores was from 60 to 144 and the mean of that was 93.21. In comparison with work stress scores according to the factors of work stress, 'work overload' (2.95) factor showed the highest work stress scores, The range of total burnout experience scores was from 24 to 90 and mean score of that was 54.18. The total work stress scores showed significant difference only in the variable of 'satisfaction with work' (F=11.36, p=.0001) The total burnout experience scores showed significant differences in the variables of religion (F=2.99, p=.033), position (F=4.53, p=.005), the reason of transfer from one department to another (F=3.40, p=.019), satisfaction with work (F=34.84, p=.0001) and annual salary (F=5.40, p=.005). The total work stress scores showed a positive correlation (r=.569, p=.0001) with the total burnout experience scores.
