Abstract

Clinical results were compared between the clear lensectomy of 59 eyes from 39 patients[group 1] and the LASIK of 56 eyes from 35 patients[group 2] for the correction of high myopia over -10 Diopter, retrospectively. At 4 months postoperatively, mean spherical equivalent of each group was -0.47+/-0.66D and 0.13+/-0.62D. Fifty-four and 85 percent of group 1 were within+/-0.5D and+/-1D, while 64 and 86 percent of group 2 were within+/-0.5D and+/-1D, respectively. Postoperative complications were noted as posterior capsular opacification in 32 eyes[54.2%] and retinal detachment in 1 eye[1.7%] by clear lensectomy of group 1, and interface particles in 1 eye[1.8%], cap decentration in 1 eye[1.8%] and vertical cap striae in 2 eyes[3.6%] by the LASIK of group 2. Conclusively, although clear lensectomy is a reasonably predictable and safe method for the correction of severe high myopia as LASIK, it must be preceded thorough preoperative study in order to minimize the retinal complications, and needs further study for safety through a longer follow-up.
