Abstract

Ten patients with trigeminal neuralgia were treated by the injection of glycerol into the trigeminal cistern. Eight patients became painless after the treatment, but one patient needed second injection for the relief of pain. Although follow-up period was less than one year these eight patients were free from pain without troublesome sensory changes. These preliminary results suggest that trigeminal neuralgia can be relieved by a simple percutaneous technique whose effect is not dependent on dense analgesia. But the long-term result of pain relief after injection of glycerol remains to be determined.
